2019 Floods Management

Severe floods affected the Southern Indian State of Karnataka, due to heavy rainfall in the Monsoon season, in the first week of August,2019. As a security measure, in the prevailing situation of heavy rains, India Meteorological Department issued Red alert to several regions of coastal and Northern regions of Karnataka state.

IGP Raghavendra Suhas studied Hydrodynamics in Krishna river basin and inflow/outflow of various nearby dams. He monitored the speed & quantum of flood waters, on a regular basis, along with the concerned staff members.

Based on the study, thousands of people were evacuated to safer places and relief camps in a systematic manner, by taking into confidence all the necessary departments. Over 6.97 lakh people were evacuated in a phased manner without any chaos & safely, by mid of August 2019.

With a view of sharing this knowledge gained during the monsoon period of August 2019, he wrote a book "Beyond Red Alert, Saving Lives " which serves as a ready reckoner, in managing flood situation, in Northern Range of Karnataka in River Krishna basin, for the police personnel.

IGP also delivered a lecture on “Floods Hydrodynamics and Disaster Management” on 52nd Engineers Day Celebration “ Engineering for Change” held at Belagavi in 2019.

Raghavendra Suhas attended “WORLD WATER DAY” observed  at Belagavi Local Centre, IEI on 22 March 2021, with theme : Valuing Water”. Suhas in his address focused on efficient usage of water and shared his experience in flood management, during heavy floods in Krishna Basin, in the Northern part of Karnataka in the year 2019.
